I’ve been putting my Takata recall off for a while now. After getting a dozen postcards with peoples scarred faces, urging me to take action before I’m another statistic, I finally made the appointment. Bef ore I get home I’m greeted with a CEL and “ Increased Emissions” message.

I called my service advisor immediately and of course he says “we just replaced the airbag, we didn’t touch anything that wo uld cause that fault” Yeah well it’s one hell of a coincedence, not 5 miles later I got this. Could they have bumped an O2 sensor while positioning the lift arms in place? They also replaced the wiring harness for the blower motor (another recall). So yea h, you did touch the wiring harness because I know the blower motor harness comes out of the main harness under the dash. “Well we’ll be happy to look at it, but I can’t promise you that we will cover the repair”

That sucks.

A few experiences of mysterious proble m s popping up right after services, coupled with my own paranoia, is one of the major things that drove me to do nearly everything to my vehicles myself.

I bought my CRV from an old lady and she had been on the Takata recall list for a few months, so when I bought it they were ready to do it at Honda and I just went in for a quick visit. I guess it took a long time to get the parts for most people.

I got a recall notice for something that sounded like it might be a blower motor but they had some other BMW overly technical yet also vague description. It said there is a way for owners to be reimbursed for repairs they’ve already done. I had my old indy mechanic in Madison replace the final stage resistor for the blower motor earlier this year, so I need to call BMW to find out if I can get any kind of reimbursement for it.

Took a few years for my dealer to my new airbag in.

If they just replaced the airbag then they didn’t replace the blower motor. Boom! Lies! Where’s my check?

I cleared the code with my reader. Which was weird. It didn’t show any codes, but when I pressed “ clear stored faults” the CEL went off, and the message went away. Now the ECU is in the “ unready” state. So I have to cancel tomorrow’ s appoi ntment, and wait for a full Emission Drive Cycl e to complete. That could take 2 weeks.

Mine’s still lit up light a xmas tree (possibly faulty abs sensor) and yet to have the battery wire recall done, not looking forwards to handing it over as I’m sure something else will go w rong

Find an excuse to drive up to some mountain roads to get that full emission drive cycle in.

Also you have less than half the miles mine has on it.

They must not care much about E46 owners, because I’ve only gotten a few notices about the driver’s side airbag. Maybe two? None were terribly threatening, at least not yet. It’s just... nearly 90 minutes to the nearest dealer. I don’t have time for this crap. I’d have to take a day off work, to drive to a part of the state I hate, the only good part would be looking around the dealer at the new cars. I can do that on the internet.

I loathe this dealer. As I sat in the waiting room, service advisor after ser vice advisor came thru to up sell every customer either tires and/ or alignment, or brake rotors + pads, fuel in jection cleanings, etc. . They also have 2 guys (outside of regular salesmen) wea ring white l abcoats (still trying to figure that out) who’s job is to sit down next to people in the waiting room and ask about what car they brought in today, and then try to get them to test drive a newer model while they are just sitting there waiting. T he 2 people that went for a test drive, their servi ce advisor ca me back with thousands in recommended repairs. The whole scheme is to have you trade it in as - is, and purchase a new BMW with a down payment lower that your repair bill would of been. “M aam y ou’ll have a new warranty that will protect you for years again st costly unforeseen   repairs ”

They don’t have the battery cables , they’re on backorder, so no need to rush. I was supposed to have that done yesterday also.

God Damn that’s pushy sales-y stuff.

The place we buy most of our cars from is the least pushy sales staff of anywhere I’ve ever been (it’s just a father and son) . They just have nice examples of nice cars, and will make them perfect before letting you take delivery, which means you pay a little more and sometimes have to wait... but their cars are excellent. They just have no sales tactics at all beyond having good cars, and being very knowledgeable. It works perfectly and I love it.

I will never go to this dealer again. This was my second visit, and it’s very clear the service advisors have a bonus structure on selling extra services. It wouldn’t surprise me if you paid for an alignment, that they never even put it on the rack half the time. If you were ac tually out of alignment on a car with 25k miles it would mean something is prematurely worn and needs to be replaced before it will hold an alignment , or you hit a curb and bent a steer ing arm or control arm.

Or, they stick it on the rack, let the computer confirm the fact that ‘of course’ it’s aligned, bam $139.95 or whatever they charge.
